For nurses and midwives

Nursing in New Zealand starts with the Nursing Council.

Nurses usually have their qualifications assessed by the Nursing Council of New Zealand, starting with credential verification, rather than through an NZQA IQA. Midwives apply to the Midwifery Council. We help you prepare each application and keep track of every step.

How the nursing route works

Why nurses follow a different route.

Many nurses assume they need an NZQA IQA. Usually you don't. Here's the route most nurses follow.

Step 1

Get your credentials verified

Your qualifications, registration and work history are verified through TruMerit (CGFNS).

Step 2

Apply to the Nursing Council

The Council assesses your education and experience and decides what you need.

Step 3 · if required

Competence assessment

Some applicants sit an exam and a practical assessment (OSCE) in New Zealand.

The goal

Registered to practise

With registration, you can apply for nursing roles and your visa.

The goal

Based on Nursing Council of New Zealand and TruMerit information. Every step is confirmed on official pages before launch.

Documents

What you'll need, and who sends it.

Verification bodies often need documents directly from your school, regulator or employers.

  • Nursing or midwifery certificates
  • Your current licence from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana
  • Passport bio page
  • CV with your clinical experience
Nurse reviewing documents

Getting documents sent for you

  1. Renew your Ghana licence if it has lapsed.
  2. Ask your nursing school for official transcripts.
  3. Request a verification of registration from the regulator.
  4. Ask each employer for a reference with your practice hours.
  5. Tell us when each one is sent, so we can track it.

You remain responsible for following up with your school, regulator and employers. We tell you exactly what to ask for.

"Pay us for a guaranteed hospital job"

Real employers recruit through their own processes. Nobody can sell you a guaranteed nursing job.

"We can help you skip the exam or OSCE"

Only the Nursing Council decides what you need. No agent can skip a Council requirement.

Nurse FAQ

Questions nurses ask us.

Still unsure? Ask our assistant or chat with us on WhatsApp.

Do nurses need an NZQA IQA?+

Usually not. The Nursing Council of New Zealand assesses nursing qualifications itself, starting with credential verification. We confirm what applies to you at your free review.

What is TruMerit?+

TruMerit (formerly CGFNS) verifies overseas nurses' credentials for the Nursing Council. It checks your education, registration and work history with the people who issued them.

Will I have to sit an exam?+

Some applicants do. The Nursing Council decides whether you need a competence assessment, which can include an exam and a practical OSCE in New Zealand.

My Ghana licence has lapsed. Can I still apply?+

Most registration bodies expect a current licence, so renewing it is often the first step. Bring your details to a free review and we'll check.

I'm a midwife. Is my route different?+

Yes. Midwives apply to the Midwifery Council of New Zealand, which has its own process. We guide you through it in the same way.

Do you handle the visa too?+

No. We help with verification and registration applications. Visa applications need a licensed immigration adviser under New Zealand law, or you can apply directly with Immigration New Zealand.
